How To Decompress After Traveling
This could seem a bit counterintuitive, couldn't it? But think about it. Travel is exhausting no matter how great of a time you have. Some vacations are more of a mental break than others, but regardless you have to get back into the swing of "normal life" once you're home. Plus, plane rides are quite taxing aren't they? As a self-proclaimed queen of relaxation, I've got an arsenal of tips to help you decompress after traveling.
Tidy up before your trip
This is a pre-travel tip to help you post-travel. Coming home to a clean room/apartment/living space is so much better than a disaster zone. My space is always messiest when I'm doing laundry or packing. You're likely doing both of these things before going away. You know what they say -- messy room messy mind (or something like that). And it's so true! When you get home from the airport jet-lagged, the last thing you want to do is clean up the mess you left behind. Climbing into your bed with fresh sheets is pure bliss. You'll thank your past self so much.
Drop your bags and head straight for the shower
Nothing makes you feel human again like a shower. I always feel gross when I get off a plane. Does anyone really leave thinking "oh that recycled air did wonders for me!"? Doubtful. Depending on how tired you are, maybe even opt for a bath or treat yourself to a face mask.
You don't need to unpack everything the second you walk through your front door
Unpacking all at once could technically work in your favor. You'll get it out of the way and feel more settled. AND there's the satisfaction of not having to live out of a suitcase anymore. That being said, it's highly unrealistic. Or at least for me it is. I usually unpack the bare essentials (ex: toothbrush) and tackle the rest the next day (or the day after…). Don't put off unpacking for too long though. You don't want to find yourself 2 weeks later still searching for that hairbrush you could have sworn was in your carry-on. If I give myself an extra day, I don't feel like I'm setting myself up for failure. Get that sh*t done in a timely manner.
Go somewhere that makes you feel like you're home again
This could be as simple as stopping by your favorite coffee shop on the way back from the airport. We all have those places we miss while we're away. In my hometown, it was always a specific local market that does the best bacon, egg and cheeses. Making a point to start off your time home with somewhere you love makes coming home feel more exciting. It gives you a "it's good to be back" vibe rather than being upset your holiday is over.
Take it easy!
Once you're home, your friends and family will want to see you (especially if you've been gone long). This isn't a bad thing at all! It's wonderful, and I'm sure you can't wait to see everyone too. But do yourself a favor and take it easy. Don't overbook yourself when you're still waking up at 4am or going to bed at 6pm. You'll have plenty of time once you get your bearings again.
